City Prairie Dogs

We are fortunate to live in a City that cares for its early residents and takes care to move them out of harms way! However...

Prairie dogs in the city need to have supplemental care as they are trapped in small pockets and cannot escape to wilderness areas: undeveloped city lots, public lands along roads and freeways, public park areas that buffer roads and under-developed areas, private and public. Their food sources are sparse or non-existent.

Within the city boundaries they have few natural predators to control their population growth and trapping and relocation is needed. Relocation is also needed when road widening and site construction threatens to eliminate a prairie dog community.

Prairie dogs do not transmit plague. Plague is caused by fleas which infect mammals. If a prairie dog is infected it will die. There is more chance of plague from free roaming cats and dogs who visit areas, like the mountains, where they may come in contact with infected fleas. The Environmental Health Department states that prairie dogs do not carry the Hanta Virus which is transmitted by deer mice.

If prairie dogs are frisky and hide when you come close, they are healthy.
